Atkinson, Thomas Witlam

Oriental and Western Siberia, A Narrative of Seven Years' Explorations and Adventures in Siberia, Mongolia, the Khirgis Steppes, Chinese Tartary and Part of Central Asia

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1858.

First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. First American edition. xvi, 18-533 pp, with folding map and 52 illustrations, some full page. Recently rebound in cloth-backed marbled boards with leather spine label; endpapers replaced. Clean, tight, and without foxing. Atkinson traveled in Central Asia and Arctic Russia for six years with his wife, Lucy (author of Recollection of Tartar Steppes and Their Inhabitants), painting, drawing, and keeping the detailed journals that formed the basis of this work. His primary interest was in recording the scenery of the region, and the engravings and descriptions of landscape in the book are quite striking.
