Atkinson traveled in Central Asia and Arctic Russia for six years with his wife, Lucy (author of Recollection of Tartar Steppes and Their Inhabitants), painting, drawing, and keeping the detailed journals that formed the basis of this work. His primary interest was in recording the scenery of the region, and the engravings and descriptions of landscape in the book are quite striking.
