Panama in 1855. An Account of the Panama Railroad, of the Cities of Panama and Aspinwall, With Sketches of Life and Character on the Isthmus

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1855.

First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 4.25" x 6.75". 246 pp. Publisher's blind-stamped brown cloth with gilt decoration on the spine. Spine faded but legible, previous owner's markings on front pastedown; otherwise unmarked, clean, and sound. Tomes was an American physician and friend of Herman Melville who served as surgeon on a vessel belonging to the Pacific Mail Steamship Company and made several voyages between San Francisco and Panama. He intended this book to be "useful as a guide to the traveler" but also of "picturesque interest" for the general reader. Smith (American Travellers Abroad T61) notes that "the first two chapters are first rate entertainment in their description of sea travel."
