Locomotive Number 60,000, An Experimental Locomotive

Philadelphia: Baldwin Locomotive Works, 1928.

Hardcover. Very good. 80 pp, illustrated. 7 x 9.75 inches, oblong. Some nibbling to cloth at bottom edge and spine. Binding sound, contents clean. As explained in the Foreword, Locomotive 60,000 was designed as an experiment to ascertain the gain in efficiency by the use of high pressure steam and high ratios of expansion. "Opportunity was also taken to try out certain novel details of construction." This book reprints the description of the locomotive and results of initial tests (at the Pennsylvania Railroad Stationar Plant) originally published in 1927, and adds the results of further testing done in road tests on a number of different lines, including the Baltimore & Ohio' Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe; Southern Pacific; and Great Northern.
