Moderate wear to edges, with cloth rubbed through at lower corners, some rubbing to spine. Binding sound, text clean. Introduction by W.H.L. Barnes. Illustrated with wood-engraved plates after Ernest Narjot. Colorful descriptions of a range of California places and people encountered by the author, a journalist, during his travels. Includes considerable content on San Francisco, and some on the Chinese population. Evans died in a steamboat disaster shortly before publication.
