The History of California

San Francisco: H.H. Bancroft & Company, 1866.

First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. xvi, 657 pp, with index. Rebound in brown buckram. Some scattered foxing, mostly limited to the margins. Eberstadt: Tuthill was long editor of the San Francisco “Bulletin.” His account of events that led to the formation of vigilance committees and his views of California life, especially between the years 1848 and 1865, are of great interest and permanent value." Chapman (A History of California, The Spanish Period): "This is the first general history of California, written as such without ulterior motive, that was ever published. The author was a newspaper man, and it was at the suggestion of Hubert Howe Bancroft (whose publishing house brought out the volume) that he wrote this book. It is in an annalistic but more or less readable style covering the years 1500 to 1864." Howes T-433, Cowan, p. 648, Sabin 97510.
