Dust jacket has 1/2 inch tear to top edge of front panel. A century ago, Tulare Lake, in the San Joaquin Valley, was the center of "a distinct natural and cultural realm." Preston writes in the preface: "By reconstructing its nature, its landscapes, and its regional character as they have changed through time, I hope also to provide the reader with a more complete picture than was previously available of the cultural-geographic story of the settlement of California as a whole."
