The Yosemite Valley: Its History, Characteristics, Features, and Theories Relating to its Origin

Yosemite Valley, CA: Nelson L. Salter, 1910.

First Edition. Soft cover. Very Good+. pp. xix, 108 + (10) ads, in original wrappers, with 21 plates from photographs by George Fiske. Light abrasion, some soiling to the rear cover, otherwise minimal wear. Clark played a significant early role in the preservation of Yosemite Valley, serving as the Park's first Guardian, under first State and then Federal authority (1864-1880; 1889-1896). He was one of the first white men to see the big trees of Mariposa Grove, and dedicated much of his life to promoting and preserving them. The present volume was sent to press just two weeks before he died at the age of 96. It is a general history and guidebook, offering a short history of exploration in the area, commentary on all the major features, lists and descriptions of flowers and trees, and practical hints for visitors.
