This was the first signficant American encyclopedia and a highly successful publishing venture. It was based on Brockhaus's German encyclopaedia (Conversations Lexikon), but much American material was added, and articles include not only the American biographies, but also discussions of American Indian languages, and lengthy entries on railroads (unusual at this early date).
