From the Foreword: "It is true that the army never established an official fort at this site. However, the army did station a small number of troops here in 1867 and 1868 and they erected the stone building that looks more like a fort than any other ruin along the Mojave Road. Also, it is well known that various military and civilian parties were attracted to this point as a campsite and spent time here. Consequently, the Pah-Ute Cree site has become known as "Fort Pah-Ute" in an informal sense through many years of useage."
