New York: Century Company, 1911.
First printing of this edition. pp [xiv], 389, in publisher's tan cloth decorated in gilt and green, with 15 plates from photographs, 4 maps, and many illustrations from sketched by Muir in the text. Minor insect damage to front board, but still a most attractive copy. "Muir selected articles which had previously appeared in several magazines and one newspaper, and edited them to create his first book. He skillfully prefaced his selections with an overview of the Sierra Nevada range, preparing the reader for more detailed aspects that follow. This book contains much of Muir's finest writing between 1875 and 1882 and is considered by many Muir admirers to be his finest book" (Kimes 189). This edition is enlarged by an index, the 15 plates, 2 new maps, and a dedication (Kimes 293).
