London: John Murray, 1854.

First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Two octavo volumes, pp. xxvii, 408; xii, 487, with 12 colored lithographic plates, 80 wood engravings, and three maps on two folding plates. Errata slip in Volume I only. Bound in full polished calf, spines with five raised bands, gilt decoration, red and black labels; marbled edges and endpapers. Wear/charring to edges of boards, corners rubbed through, joints a bit tender, some scuffing to front panel of Vol. II, but still an attractive set, internally very clean. Hisel Library label and engraved armorial bookplate of the Earl of Home on front pastedown of each volume. Hooker (1817-1911) served as assistant surgeon and botanist on James Clark Ross' Antarctic expedition of 1839-43 and published important works on the flora of New Zealand, Tasmania, and Antarctica before setting out on an expedition to India, where he became the first person to make an almost complete circuit of Kangchenjunga (the third highest mountain in the world). His account of the journey is a classic of early Himalayan travel and exploration, containing observations on the people and cultures he encountered, his botanical discoveries (which were also published separately with more scientific detail), and the geology, zoology, meteorology, and geography of the region. Speake p. 562; Baume p. 54-55; Neate H108.
