First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Two volumes, 8vo, in original cloth, complete with large folding map, frontispiece in each volume, and 25 other lithographed plates (10 folding). Spines toned, with chipping to cloth at ends, and a horizontal closed tear across to the spine cloth on each volume. Corners rubbed through, hinges wobbly but intact. Fair to good overall. Small bookplate of Los Angeles attorney and bibliophile Frances Haynes Lindley (1899-1987) on each front pastedown. Burton was appointed consul at Damascus in 1869. There he resumed his old practice of disguising himself in order to mix with the people and gather information. Charles Drake came to Syria under the auspices of the Palestine Exploration Society. Both men traveled extensively in the region (including Lebanon) before collaborating on this work. Penzer p. 85-88.
