Gift inscription dated 1837 on front flyleaf. The author was the son of Sir John Barrow, who traveled and worked in China and South Africa and served in the British Admiralty, where he was a great promoter of Arctic voyages of exploration and discovery. The younger man followed in his father's footsteps as a traveler and writer, producing popular and well-recieved works on his travels in Ireland, Iceland, Northern Europe, and Austria, Lombardy, and Bavaria.
