6.75 x 9.5 inches, [iv], 128 pp; title printed in red and black, with engraved title vignette, head and tail pieces, and portrait of Maratta (often lacking). Bound in contemporary full vellum with five raised bands, title written on spine. Front hinge broken, light foxing and soiling to margins, else very good. Scarce biography of Italian Baroque painter Carlo Maratta (also Maratti) (1625-1713) by a his contemporary and friend, Giovanni Bellori, also including a short essay by Bellori on Maratta's painting of Daphne. Maratta painted many important altarpieces in Italian churches, as well as decorative ceiling frescoes for several Roman palaces, including that of Pope Clement X.
