Firrst printing of the second edition (first published 1881). Original gilt-decorated green cloth. Spine lettering a bit dulled, brief gift inscription on front pastedown, else a fine copy, with an original prospectus for the book laid in. In the original dust jacket, with has some small chips to the top edge, sunning and light dust soiling to spine. "The most readable historical narrative of early California" (Howes B-325).
