Crespi (1721-1782) was a Franciscan missionary and explorer of California. He participated in expeditions with Francisco Palou, Junipero Serra, Gaspar de Portola, and Pedro Fages. This volume ncludes a biographical sketch and account of Crespi's principal expeditions by Bolton, followed by English translations of "five intimate personal letters written by Father Crespi during the historic journeys to San Diego, Monterey, and San Francisco bays in 1769-1770," and selections from Crespi's diaries.
