In this classic of travel literature, Harrer, an accomplished Austrian mountaineer, recounts his escape from a World War II POW camp in India, his trek with one companion arcoss the high Tibetan plateau, and the the subsequent years he spent living in Lhasa. There he served as tutor to the current Dalai Lama and observed ceremonies and customs that had rarely been seen by Westerners.
