George Pauling was a British engineer who built railway lines in South Africa, Rhodesia and other Southern and Central African countries. He founded his railway construction company, Pauling & Co., in 1894. As described on the dust jacket, "the early days of struggle; the adventures in the rough long-ago of Syria and South Africa; the splendours of the engineering triumphs of Pauling's middle life, make up a very personal and human record, through which shine the qualities that gave Pauling his success."
