Explanatory text for each sample offers instruction for how the effect can be created in oil paint. Text is in French; a typed English translation of the first 26 descriptions is laid in, alsong with a few pages of marble samples (images) removed from a catalogue. Fair to good only: Portfolio worn and soiled; all plates present (with some foxing to margins and a few penciled notees), but with lacking the final text leaf, covering plates 36-40, and some damage to the previous page, covering plates 33-35.
