Boudoir card labeled by hand on the (otherwise blank) verso "179. Muir Glacier." Captioned on the mount "B.C. Towne, Portland, Oregon. "Alaskan, Columbia River and Northwestern Scenery." Bertram C. Towne was a photographer active in Portland from 1884-1895 who published many boudoir-format views of the Pacific Northwest. He is known to have visited Alaska in 1887, making that a likely date for this image. Muir Glacier is located in what is now Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. Because the glacier has undergone a rapid, well-documented retreat over the last century, photographs of its appearance at known points in time provide valuable documentation for researchers.
