[1911].

First Edition. Portfolio 8 from Edward Curtis' monumental work, The North American Indian, which was issued between 1907 and 1930 as a set of 20 bound volumes accompanied by 20 portfolios, each containing 34-39 large photogravure plates. The work was sold by subscription, and although an edition of 500 was planned, the lavish and expensive sets did not sell out, and is believed that only 272 sets were ever produced. Complete portfolios are now quite scarce. Portfolio 8 contains plate numbers 256-292 and is one of two volumes featuring the inland tribes of the northwestern United States. The plates are printed on Holland Van Gelder paper, and each has a  printed caption, plate number, photographer's copyright, and printer's credit in the margin. Sheets measure approximately 18 x 22 inches, with the image area measuring about 11 x 15.5 inches. All plates are present, but they are not in the original portfolio. Thirty (30) plates and the printed plate list have been bound into a large volume that appears roughly contemporary and was designed in a style similar to the portfolio (3/4 brown leather, beige cloth). Seven plates are loose. Of these, 5 are very nicely matted. Two are laid into the book, with their tissue guards still present. The plates are bound in on stubs, such there would be no loss to the margins if disbound.  Bound volume has dark staining to the leather at the base of the spine (not affecting interior). Plates are generally clean, some with varying degrees of scattered marginal foxing, generally quite light (if present at all), but more extensive on the seven unbound plates.

Prompted by a conviction that Native Americans were a "vanishing race," Curtis resolved to create a comprehensive visual record of the American Indian. Describing his inspiration, Curtis wrote, “The passing of every old man or woman means the passage of some tradition, some knowledge of sacred rite possessed by no other; consequently, the information that is to be gathered, for the benefit of future generations, respecting the modes of life of one of the greatest races of mankind, must be collected at once or the opportunity will be lost for all time.” Although Curtis' work was often not truly documentary (he posed his subjects and used props, some of which were inauthentic), his photographs are stunning examples of pictorialist photography that, as Vine DeLoria Jr. put it, "have come to occupy a particular place in the pantheon of cherished symbols of American identity." .
