Hardcover. Good. Facsimile reprint of the 1811 London edition, with a new introduction by Maguire. Quarto. pp. xxiv, 25-394, with frontis portrait of Pike, 4 maps (two double-page). Publisher's blue cloth stamped in gilt. Page edges untrimmed. Ex-library with call number obscured with dye on the lower spine and a few ink stamps internally. Small repair to title page. Pike led two expeditions under authority of President Thomas Jefferson through the Louisiana Purchase territory, first in 1805–1806 to reconnoiter the upper northern reaches of the Mississippi River, and then in 1806–1807 to explore the southwest to the fringes of the northern Spanish-colonial settlements of New Mexico and Texas. Maguire's introduction describes the circumstances of the original publication of Pike's narrative, and summarizes the remaining years of Pike’s brief life (Pike was killed in battle at York, Ontario, in April 1813).
