Fur Brigade to the Bonaventura: John Work's California Expedition, 1832-1833, for the Hudson's Bay Company

San Francisco: California Historical Society, 1945.

First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. One of 500 copies, printed by Lawton & Alfred Kennedy. 112 pp, in original brown cloth with paper spine labels. In a clear plastic dust jacket and housed in a custom slipcase. Touch of rubbing to lower corners, else fine. Laid in is a postcard bearing a handwritten note from editor Alice Maloney to her Aunt Alice, sending the book and commenting that "the demand for copies, especially from dealers, has been unexpectedly large." In 1832, Work traveled on behalf of the Hudson's Bay Company to the Sacramento Valley in Mexican California. Fur trapping proved poor in the area, but the party explored the coast from San Francisco to Cape Mendocino before returning to Fort Vancouver in October, 1833.
