Rebound in green cloth with gilt titles on spine, no illustration or decoration on boards. Upper corners bumped, some smudges to margins. Supplement (published in 1891): pp. xxii, (4), 147, with 14 plates and additional drawings in the text. In original green cloth with beveled edges, gilt lettering and decoration. Bookplate on front pastedown, foxing to front and rear blanks, otherwise clean and sound. One of the classics of South American mountaineering literature, the book describes Whymper's climbs of Cotopaxi and Chimborazo, among others, and also includes much on the natural history and geology of the Andes. Neate (W66) describes the book as "still essential reading for anyone visiting Ecuador."
