According to the Preface, at the time Pierce wrote this book he had been a resident of Brownsville, Texas for more than 50 years and there was n"o one in all that long stretch bordering Mexico who...has been a deeper student of its history." Adams, Six Guns 1725: "has a chapter on the Texas rangers and outlawry along the Mexican border."
