First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. First printing of this illustrated edition. 9.5" x 7", 240, [2] pp, with 8 color plates by Kay and the original Tenniel line drawings in black and white. In publisher's red cloth binding with mounted color illustration and illustrated endpapers. Spine slightly sunned, upper corner of front board bumped, mild crease to lower corner of some pages, previous owners' names on front free endpaper, but a sound and attractive copy. Gertrude Alice Kay (1884-1939) was an American artist who studied under Howard Pyle and illustrated numerous children's books -- ten of which she also wrote. Her work also appeared regularly in Ladies Home Journal, McCall's, and other national magazines. Her illustrations for Alice in Wonderland were among her most popular works.
