Hardcover. Very good. Bohn's Philosophical Library edition. Two volumes, approximately 7" x 5", bound in green cloth with gilt spine lettering. Cloth on the two volumes is slightly different in color, Volume I has a mild spine slant, gilt is faded on Volume II. Internally sound and clean, pages partially unopened. Martineau's translation, first published in 1853, introduced the English-speaking world to the work of French philosopher Auguste Comte, "whose system charted the evolution of the sciences from the superstitious through the metaphysical to the positive stage, in which law, rather than supernatural influences or abstract systems, became the basis for understanding" (ODNB entry on Martineau).
