The Spell of China

New York: The Page Company, 1917.

First Edition. Hardcover. Very good in a Good dust jacket. First impression. xiv, 404 pp, with folding map. 8 color plates, and 47 half-tone illustrations from photographs, in lovely pictorial binding, with the scarce dust jacket. Lower corner of front board bumped, small dampstain to lower rear board (not affecting intererio), else a very nice copy. Jacket is missing about two inches of lower spine and has some chips at the top edge. Bell traveled first to Hong Kong, then Canton and from there headed north to Macao, Hangchow (Hangzhou), and Shanghai, with several stops along the way. He then went west along the Yangtze, visiting Nanking, Kiukiang (Jiujiang) and Hankow, where he boarded a train for Peking. The final part of his journey took him to Tsingtao and Japanese-occupied Korea.
