A New Jersey native, Rockfellow arrived in the Arizona Territory and began mining in 1878. He later worked as a guide to other prospective miners (and once as a guide to U.S. Cavalry troops in pursuit of Indian raiders), started a ranch in the Cochise Stronghold/Dragoon Mountains, served as Justice of the Peace in Willcox,and became principal of Tombstone's schools and a mathematics instructor at the University of Arizona.
