No dust jacket. Morse served in the Chinese Imperial Maritime Custom Service from 1874 to 1908 and then wrote several scholarly works on China in his retirement. The Preface to this volume says it "is intended to portray the present state of the Chinese Empire, with such record of the past as will show by what process of evolution the existing state has been reached."
