Scenes of Wonder and Curiosity in California. A Tourist's Guide to the Yo-Semite Valley

New York and San Francisco: A. Roman and Company, 1870.

First Edition. Hardcover. Good+. Revised edition. pp 292 +4 (ads), 104 engravings. Original green cloth, gilt lettering. Corners rubbed, boards lightly scuffed, cloth chipped at spine ends, minor foxing. Bookplate of businessman, socialite, and art collector James Hazen Hyde on the front pastedown, private library stamp on rear pastedown (no other such markings). Hutchings was one of the most dedicated and energetic promoters of California and particularly the Yosemite Valley--first via the Hutchings California Magazine and then in his books. He and his wife ran the Hutchings House hotel in Yosemite from 1864-74, and from 1880-84 Hutchings served as Guardian of the Park (then owned by the State of California). This was the first work to describe the Yosemite area in detail. The first edition appeared in 1860.
