First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. 299 pp, in original decorated cloth. Spine slightly faded, else a fine copy, with a small advertising sheet from John J. Newbegin, Bookseller (San Francisco) offering this as "A Fine Item for Californiana Collectors" laid in. Mulford arrived in California in 1856 and remained for 16 years. His "charming story" (Cowan, p. 447) recounts his voyage from New York to San Francisco as a hand on the clipper Wizard, and (among other things) prospecting for gold and copper, working as a ship's cook, and a 10-month whaling voyage in Marguerita Bay, off the coast of Mexico.
