First publication in this form; originally a series of articles published in the Newport newspaper Herald of the Times, written in opposition to Van Buren's economic policies and in support of the Whig Party platform. Hazard (1797-1886) was a Rhode Island textile manufacturer and dedicated social reformer who favord protections for American domestic manufacturing as a solution to unemployment. He later published works on capital punishment and poverty issues.
