Petites Histoires aux Enfants

Petites Histoires aux Enfants

Paris: Flammarion, [1918].

Hardcover. Near fine. 95 pp, with original wrappers bound in to a fine binding (unsigned) of three-quarter leather and blue marbled boards, with matching marbled endpapers. Mild rubbing to joints, minor chips to original wrappers. The author of this scarce book of short tales for children was the first wife of French journalist and statesman Henry de Jouvenel. After the pair divorced, he married Colette, who in turn had a scandalous affair with Claire and Henry’s son, Bertrand. Claire was a political lobbyist who worked for Czechoslovakian independence, but found relaxation in writing several books of maxims and fairy tales. Two of her books have prefaces by Anatole France, and another by Paul Valery.
