Entree et Tour du Seras Kierat [Beyazit Square, Constantinpole]
Unmounted albumen photograph, 20.5 x 26 cm (about 8" x 10"), ca. 1890. Very good condition, with one shallow crease at the lower edge. Captioned and signed in the negative; verso blank. A wonderful image showing Beyazit Square in Constantinople bustling with activity. The arched gate and is 85-meter fire-watch tower (Seraskier of Beyazit Tower) were once part of the Ministry of War and now mark the entrance to Istanbul University. The Sébah & Joaillier studio was named after the renowned Ottoman photographer Pascal Sébah (1823-1886) died and his son Joannes (Jean) Sébah and brother Cosmi Sébah formed a partnership with Istanbul-based photographer Polycarpe Joaillier.
