Woolman (1720-1772) was an American Quaker leader and pioneer abolitionist. His Journal was first published in 1774. According to ANB, "Woolman’s ministry had few marks of public success; his role in moving the Quakers away from slaveholding was probably most notable, along with his influence on later abolitionists. The effect of his personal ministry upon countless individuals cannot be measured. His Journal, however, had obvious influence: Henry Crab Robinson called it 'a perfect gem … in a style of the most exquisite purity and grace' (quoted in J. G. Whittier’s introduction to an edition of the Journal published in England), and William Ellery Channing pronounced it'“beyond comparison the sweetest and purest autobiography” in English.' His writings, especially his Journal, were even more popular in England than America and have proved to be a spiritual and moral treasure that have had a growing influence upon successive generations."
