The story, told in verse in the first person, describes Topsy the pony's early years with his mother, a donkey friend, and his "enemies" the geese; his first young human masters; joining a circus where he learns tricks, befriends an elephant, and ultimately becomes a famous performer; and finally returning to retire in the "dear old fields" where he was raised.
