First American Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Two octavo volumes, each with a folding frontispiece, pp. xvi, 388, [4] (ads); vii, 475, bound in contemporary tree calf with leather spine labels. Minor chipping at foot of Volume II, scattered foxing; very good. Bookplate of Silas Baker on the front pastedown of each volume, along with his handwritten name and 1824 date on each front free endpaper. Expanded edition of a series of lectured Priestley orignal delivered to his students at Warrington Academy. Finding that the curriculum was tailored toward the professions, while the students were more likely to take up civil service or mercantile careers, Priestley wrote his lectures--on a wide range of subjects, from the uses of history to the feudal system to criminal law to taxation to religious freedom--with the latter audience in mind.
