First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 8vo, 488 pp, in contemporary full calf binding with red spine label. Lacking front free endpaper, otherwise complete. Chip missing from head of spine, bookplate of the Little Rock Circulating Library on front pastedown, moderate toning and foxing, both joints cracked, with boards loosening but holding. Stoddard was the first civil and military commandant of Upper Louisiana. Clark (II, 168) notes that "records, public documents, and old manuscripts were open to his inspection, and these he incorporated into his Sketches." This work contains some of the earliest detailed geographical information published on the region and also includes description of the Native American tribes who resided there and their interactions with the Spanish, French, and English.
