Inscribed on the front pastedown "To a new friend who seem a very old one and has become a very dear one. Robert Lowell, Oct. 8, 1870." Unfortunately, the inscribee is unknown. Robert Traill Spence Lowell (1816 –1891) was an Episcopal clergyman, educator, and poet. He was the son of Unitarian minister Charles Lowell and elder brother of poet and literary critic James Russell Lowell.
