Oliver Twist. A Serio-Comic Burletta in Four Acts, As Performed at the Winter Garden

New York and Lndon: Samuel French & Son.

Softcover. Very good-. 44 pp script in original printed wrappers. Undated, but ca. 1878-1887 based on publisher's address. Some loss of paper at lower spine, very mild vertical grease, otherwise very good. This adaptation was first performed in the fall of 1838, before the full text of Dickens' original novel, published serially, had been released in Bentley's Miscellany. (The last installment appeared in April, 1839). Philip Cox reports in Reading Adaptations (Manchester University Press, 2000) that Dickens attended a performance and was so horrified that "in the middle of the first scene he laid himself down upon the floor in the corner of the box and never rose from it until the drop scene fell." .
