First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 10.5" x 8", 126 pp + 21 engraved plates by Seth Eastman, in publisher's red cloth with decoration in gilt. A complete and serviceable copy in fair to good condition. Cloth frayed along front joint, several small losses of cloth (at corners and along joints), some soiling to front board, tissue guards toned, foxing throughout. Contemporary gift inscription in pencil on front flyleaf (Presented to Mrs. Roxana Simonton by W.D. Simonton, Lowndes County, Alabama"). Captain and Mrs. Eastman were stationed at Fort Snelling, Minnesota from 1841 through 1848, during which time Mrs. Eastman recorded the daily life of the Sioux and the Winnebago.
