Collection of Seven 1860s Carte-de-Visite (CDV) Photographs of Cannes and Surroundings
Cannes, France: Andre Gasquet.
Seven carte de visite photographs (6 x 10 cm albumen photographs on slightly larger mounts) by Cannes-based photographer Andre Gasquet, dated to the late 1860s based on the studio address on the backstamp. All in fine condition, all on identical mounts. Gasquet was originally a gunsmith and armorer, but opened a photography studio in 1866. According to a blog post on the website ArtPlastoc, he "produced views of Cannes and its surroundings but also of Nice and Monaco...and studio portraits against the background of large painted canvases showing views from Cannes (Le Port and Estérel, La Croisette and the Islands)." Included in this group are a distant view of Cannes from the beach, a closer-in city view with the Hotel de Square Brougham and some construction work in the foreground; views of the Hotel Gray et d'Albion, Château Vallombrosa, and another large chateau or hotel we have not identified, and a shot of a large stone cross, possibly in the Cimetière du Grand Jas.
