1940s Recife, Brazil Photo Album Including Great Carnival Images

Very good. 7.25" x 10.25" string-tied photograph album containing 82 images: 76 black and white snapshots ranging in size from 2.25" x 3.25" to 2.75" x 4.5", and six real photo postcards, all glued to album pages. Photos and album in very good condition. This album was compiled by Morris LaMountain (1923-1976) of Westport, New York, while he was serving about the ammunition ship USS Nitro during World War II. In 1943, the ship made two trips to a naval base in Recife, Brazil, carrying ammunition to support the U,S. Navy's South American patrols. The album includes some military images (both American and Brazilian), but primarily consists of interesting street scenes in Brazil. Other than the real photos postcards (of scenes in Rio and Sao Paolo), none of the images are captioned, but those with landmarks we have been able to identify were taken in Recife and the surrounding region. They include shots of boats in port, city and rural streets, markets, street vendors and their wares, grass huts, streetcars, a church in Guararapes, and at least 15 images of costumed people parading through the streets as part of Carnival festivities.
