Collection of Postal Cards Relating to Stolen Vehicles in the Western United States, 1922-1932
Good. Twenty-five (25) postal cards relating to stolen automobiles, all mailed to the Sheriff of Guthrie, Oklahoma between 1922 and 1932. Fifteen (15) of the cards offer rewards for stolen cars, the other ten report on cars that were reported stolen but have now been recovered. Most of the reward cards and all of the recovery notices come from insurance companies in Oklahoma City, Dallas/Fort Worth, Wichita, and Denver. Three reward cards come from other law enforcement agencies -- in Hutchinson, KS; Medicine Lodge, KS; and Lovington, NM. The reward cards describe the notable characteristics of the stolen vehicle (license plate, make/model, extra equipment, body damage, type of tires, speedometer reading, etc.) and in some cases the location of the theft, owner, or (in one case) information about the thief. In all cases, it is made clear that the reward will only apply if the car is found "not burned or wrecked." The recovery cards list as many as 12 cars by make, motor no., and owner, instructing the recipient to "remove the above cards from your files." The condition of these cards varies considerably. Some are very good, some are lightly soiled, a few extensively so.
