Very good. Eleven complete issues of the newspaper Daily Alta California, dating from between December 21, 1870 and April 22, 1871. Each 4-page issue measures 25" x 31.5" and has been folded to about 8" x 12.5". Some old dampstaining to margins only; overall very good condition. Published in San Francisco, the Daily Alta California was founded in 1849 and published through 1891.These issues carry local, regional, national, and international news stories as well as homestead and mining notices, announcements of performances and events, railroad and steamer schedules, and copious local advertising.  Among the local articles in these issues: "Mendicancy in San Francisco," "The Chinese Mission School," "Foreign Miners Tax," "The Tyler-Dobson Homicide," "University of California Special Meeting of the Board of Regents," "An Outrage: Twenty-Five Dollars Charged as Sheriff's Fees for taking an Insane Man to Stockton," "Laura D. Fair, The Assassin of the Late Hon. A.P. Crittenden on Trial."
