Chipping and a long tear to the delicate dust jacket, internals very good. The author was an English diplomat and scholar of Chinese language and culture. He modified a system for the romanization of Chinese languages developed by Thomas Wade, and the resulting Wade–Giles system was widely used by English-speaking scholars until the introduction of Pinyin in 1979.
