First Edition. Very good-. pp. 13-225, with frontis portrait of Krueger, in original embossed flexible leatherette binding, which is well worn at the edges and joints. Inscribed on the front free endpaper from "The Kreugers" in 1930. Laid in is a letter from noted Texas bookseller Fred White, Jr., explaining why the pagination of this book begins at 12. (After the book was printed, but while it was at the binder, some of the author's children decided the first few pages contained embarrassing material and insisted those pages be removed). Max Krueger (1851-1927) was a German immigrant who arrived in Texas in 1868 and worked as a cowboy, stevedore, well-digger, photographer, and merchant before developing a large ranch, the Twin Sisters, in Blanco County. After the ranch went bust in the late 19th century, Krueger became a successful farm machinery salesman and eventually, in 1899, became a founding partner in the San Antobio Machine and Supply Company.
