Approximately half of this book is devoted to commercial, industrial, and territorial expansion, capital accounts and related topics. Beard (1874-1948) was president of the American Historical Association and also of the American Political Science Association. He was elected to membership in the American Philosophical Society. He was a prolific author and public intellectual—influential and controversial.
