Letter on Corpulence Addressed to the Public
New York: Mohun, Ebbs & Hough, 1864.
Softcover. Very good. Fourth edition, with addenda. Disbound (removed from a larger volume, without wrappers), 36 pp, very good. A classic of modern mainstream diet literature, the first to popularize a low-carbohydrate diet as the path to weight loss. At one time obese, Banting changed his diet at the suggestion of Dr. William Harvey, who tried a low-carbohydrate diet with his diabetes patients. Although not the diet's inventor, Banning and his Letter gave it a permanent place in modern times. It was first published in London in 1863 and went through at least 20 editions by the end of the nineteenth century. This appears to be the most complete early edition of the text, with the appendix containing Dr. William Harvey's own account of his experimental use of the diet.
